2010Global markets struggled with insolvency resulting from the fallout of unregulated commerce. Because of this, crucial governmental funding for viral and preventative health services were widely neglected, leaving the United States with little if any social safety net as the first signs of the viral pandemic began to appear.
2013Despite the optimism entering the new millennium, the prolonged global attitude of economic protectionism and diplomatic bickering was still widespread. This caused the global agenda to remain firmly fixated on the global economy, even as the planet entered into the long predicted thermal tipping point set in motion by global warming. As a result of the drastic changes in global thermal zones, areas once designated as temperate or even sub-polar began experiencing conditions ideal for a new wave of the virus to flourish as the traditionally dormant periods over winter were now perpetually active, with dramatic negative results.
2016The virus became a super virus when it unexpectedly cross-mutated joining with both pre-existing human and swine flu viruses. As with the original West Nile Virus, insects became chief carrier agents, spreading the virus among both human and animal populations. The inadequate response to the viral threat offered by the global community was ultimately too little, too late, and by the end of the decade the US Congress, as well as other First World global leaders, began to recognize the severity of the outbreak.
2019The CDC in the United States created an offshoot department, the Department of Virus Control or DVC, to exclusively address the pandemic.
2020Manufacturing and global food supply chains became unsteady due to rising difficulties relating to human exposure to viral infection during harvesting and dispersal phases, resulting in disruptions to national and global supply distribution.
With the global food supply and distribution system at risk, the once controversial topic of long term preparedness could now be discussed in earnest.
After months of hard fought negotiations, and at the urging of the ever important DVC, the preventative decision was ultimately made by the government to begin investment in the Automated Air and Food Distribution system or AAFD. A multi-decade, multi-trillion dollar automated dispersal system which, when completed in 2060, would allow people to remain safely in their homes while receiving food rations and breathable air as they awaited the ultimate defeat of the viral pandemic. Whilst under construction, people were urged to remain in their homes as much as possible avoiding unnecessary outdoor exposure to insects or large groups of people.
2040After decades of ebb and flow, the virus mutated yet again thwarting any attempts to develop a viable vaccine. Again at the urging of the DVC, US citizens were instructed to keep all doors and windows closed as well as avoid any exposure to the outside. A temporary curfew was ultimately set in place as the DVC began delivering food rations by DVC employees outfitted with protective gear.
2050With the quarantine still in effect and the viral pandemic now at its global apex, the DVC, citing a variant clause in the war powers act officially took over as the sole acting governmental agency, having been given sweeping new powers in thehopes of finding a way to control the rapidly deteriorating environment and safeguard the population. Lawmakers in Washington voted without objection, citing the crucial need of the citizenry to place total faith in the integrity andingenuity of the Department. The vote brought an emotional close to the house and senate who then both suspended all sessions untilfurther notice, citing safety reasons for the decision. This would be the last session of both US houses of congress.
Despite the best efforts of the DVC and its global counterparts, the virus continued to wreak havoc and death on a global scale. In 2056, Moscow, overwhelmed with staggering human losses could no longer safely maintain its nuclear reactors, causing an accidental meltdown and the ensuing detonation of several reactors in its grid.
The Automated Air and Food Distribution system is completed. Across the United States, the DVC orders the complete sealing of all doors and windows on buildings up to three stories high to prevent any further outbreaks and viral infections. In response to the nation now being under perpetual quarantine, the DVC launches a sweeping PR campaign in order to keep citizens informed, as well as reassured, as to the daily progress in the fight against the virus. All television transmissions are now methodically developed by the DVC.
Soon afterwards, Brother Hugo Peoples is enlisted as the face of the DVC.
Other notable DVC personality Professor Edwin Stills was also recruited as a documentary presenter.
